KIDS VOTE-8/10 EAST WALK WITH ROCKS TO CLIMB ON, SMALL WATERFALL AND VARIOUS CAIRNS ON THE SUMMIT

  • By the cattle grid at the start of the path up to Pen Y Ghent is a area for a few cars to park sensibly, or there is space for a couple of cars at the start of the path up fountains fell ( approx. 1 mile difference)

  • From the main parking area head up the road to the sign posted path on the right just past the 2nd cattle grid, you will notice the grass path leading up the fellside, beware it can get boggy.

  • The path is well defined, and follows the up the fellside; it was quite icy when we went and due to the rocks it gets quite slippery so care needed, but plenty of options to step around the path on the grass.

Plenty of rocks to rest on or climb on along the way

  • .The path is part of the Pennine way, so well defined as it leads up the fell side for approx. 1/2 mile. The you continue to follow it to the right uphill.

  • There is a couple of cairns as you reach the summit plateau with great views. The path leads past the cairns, you can either follow the main path or follow the wall line towards the summit in the distance which can be seen in clear weather.

  • Fountains fell was was once mined for coal between 1790 and 1860, you can see mini, overgrown quarries/shaft areas.

  • Be prepared this top section can get really boggy, we were quite lucky it was so cold as most of it most iced over. You can just about make out the path in the snow.

THE SUMMIT CAIRN

Retrace your footsteps back to the start, for a nice quick afternoon walk, if you feeling energetic you can add in Darnbrook Fell.
