COWS ON YOUR WALK

What to do if you see cows on your path!

So today was the first time I was brave and walked through a field of cattle knowing they were in there SOMEWHERE. All was going well until we get 3/4 of the way to the other side, when one looks up and starts walking towards us, YEP then they all follow, 😰😰😰😰 Bravery soon disappeared and panic set in, just me, my mum, the 2 girls and a field of 30 cows or so we thought 💭 We looked back the gate was too far away to even chance running, ( yes I know we shouldn’t run but i was that scared the thought crossed my mind) luckily we spotted a little 10x10 enclosed pen and decided that was the safest option, so we ran and jumped the fence like some kind of Ninja warrior 🤣 I really don’t know what it is but when they are free to roam and not behind a wall they scare me. We stood in the Pen hoping they forgot we were there... oh no they didn’t, they got even more curious and probably laughed among themselves at how stupid we looked hid inside a animal pen. As they got closer and closer we realised they were not cows but bullocks and 2 big bulls, could it get any worse. Half an hour of them getting closer, watching us, head butting each other, they eventually moved away just enough for us to run for our lives. I honestly thought we were sleeping in that pen and now we are home safe we can laugh about it. Please tell me I’m not the only one that is scared of cows, I’m not sure if I’m worse because I have the kids with me but wow that was the scariest and funniest experience we have had.

So since getting home we did a bit of research.

Dos and don’ts from the Ramblers Association Do Try to avoid getting between cows and their calves. Be prepared for cattle to react to your presence, especially if you have a dog with you. Move quickly and quietly, and if possible walk around the herd. Keep your dog close and under effective control on a lead around cows and sheep Don’t Don’t hang onto your dog. If you are threatened by cattle - let it go as to allow the dog to run to safety. Don’t put yourself at risk. Find another way round the cattle and re-join the footpath as soon as possible. Don’t panic or run. Most cattle will stop before they reach you. If they follow just walk on quietly.
