TERRAIN-MAINLY STONE TRACK, LOOSE SCREE AND ROCKY IN PLACES WITH SOME STONE STEPS

We have done Old Man Coniston a few times, it has various routes up the summit, but each time we have gone up via the old quarry ruins from Walna scar road, as we find it full of character.

But this was Ariya first big climb at just 2.5 years old.

So parking at Walna Scar road, which is a steep road from Coniston and a large car park at the start of the walk.

On the other side of the car park, start walking up the gravel track, for the first section its a slight incline, the path continues and rises steeper and turns rough underfoot.

You continue on some steep zig zags until you come to a level section of the old quarry ruins.

We stopped here and had a break and explored the ruins.

From here you continue on the path to Low water, which is another great place to stop with the kids to throw some stones.

From here the path continues steeply up the hillside, you have the final push to the summit over some rockier ground, once at the top the Trig point comes into view.

The views from the summit are amazing, this has been one of our favourite walks, plenty of places to stop and rest along the way, even a paddle in the tarns, but be careful as the weather can change dramatically, we have had sunshine and gale winds with poor visibility which makes navigating hard, a couple of times we have even turned back due to high winds for the safer option.
